As a follow-up to my previous post...

Under the DVD specifications, can layer changes only be made at the beginning of a Cell, ie only at a chapter marker?

Or can a layer change be made mid-Cell?

If layer changes can only be made at a Cell boundary, I could put chapter markers in my DVD authoring program only at points where I would be happy for a layer change to occur.

Then it wouldn't matter which Cell was chosen by the burn program (eg Toast) for the layer change - because I will have already pre-selected suitable options.

Is this right?

Thanks.

Brendan.

Yes

No, any cell.

No, the begin of the cell is the begin of the new layer.

The layer break point is not necessarily a new chapter, but could be. there is no link between the two except that a chapter is always a cell too.

Not so sure. tests must be made.

Thanks Jérôme!

I think I understand this:

Chapters are a subset of Cells
A layer change can only occur at a new Cell

So provided new Cells occur frequently in the Title (eg, there are Chapter markers every few minutes, hence Cells at least as frequent) then it is likely that Toast would be able to find a suitable Cell at which to trigger the layer change, without having to create a new Cell itself.

This would mean I don't need to get fancy DVD Authoring programs, I always put lots of Chapters in my Titles, and put them at scene changes where a layer change would not be obvious.

But, the proof may be in the burning.
