I  am trying to create a PAL DVD with one 20 buttons menu in DVD Studio 4.

The buttons are in 2 colums and 10 rows. Each button's size is 325 x 33 pixels.
Each button jumps to a single VTS (20 short films in PAL 16x9).

This leads to the problem – I have to do the menu in 4x3 because a 16x9 menu on DVD is limited to 18 buttons maximum.

But my videos are in 16x9 auto Letterbox. And some standalone DVD players don't display the menu pillarboxed.
These are older players that don’t have HDMI.

Question 1: Can this be improved in myDVDEdit so all players will show a pillarboxed 4x3 menu?

As an alternative I have tried a trick: I have set the 16x9 menu in DVD Studio to 4x3 and built the DVD (with 20 buttons).

In myDVDEdit I have set the VTS menus to Aspect 16x9 auto Letterbox.

Now my players indeed display the menu in 16x9.

Question 2: Is this a good idea that will work on most players?

And can you please help me doing the settings correctly?

Thank you, I am curious to hear your thoughts.

Hi olf.
The maximum number of buttons is not limited because it's a 16x9 menu but because it's a 16x9 AND letterbox menu. Each mode needs the same number of buttons
- 4x3 or 16x9 only -> 36 buttons max.
- 16x9 + letterbox or 16x9 + panscan -> 18 buttons max.
- 16x9 + letterbox + panscan -> 12 buttons max.

Your problem is, if I remember well, DVD Studio only propose 4x3 or 16x9 + letterbox.

The only solution I see is set the menu to 4x3, build the DVD, and set the VTS menus to 16x9. Not to 16x9 auto letterbox.

You will have a dialog box asking you to change the video streams aspect too. Click on Fix.
Of course, with this solution, the menu will be distorted on a 4x3 screen, but no choices.

I hope DVD Studio allow 4x3 menus in a 16x9 project otherwise you will have to mixe two projects and rewrite all the commands. Really not simple.

Hi Jérôme, thank you for this interesting tip. I will try that later and post my test results. And yes, DVD Studio supports 4x3 menu and 16x9 video in one project.

If only the 4x3 screen looks distorted that seems to be ok, because it is more likely that people have an old player and a new 16x9 screen. The old 4x3 screens are quite rare.

The distorted 4x3 menu on 16x9 screen was my main concern. And your technique will avoid that, if I understand correctly.

Which brings me to my original question 1: Is there a way to force pillarbox for the 4x3 menu?

No.

It's a player problem.
A marked 4x3 video must be pillar boxed on a 16x9 screen. If not, the player doesn't do its job.

I have tried it and the menu works very well on the 16x9 TV, even with the old players.
Great!

On the 4x3 TV my two old players behave differently. One player shows the menu correctly (distorted, as expected).

But the other player shows the background picture adjusted to the settings of the player (4x3 letterboxed or pan-scan, both not distorted). Only the subpicture of the menu is distorted. So the positions don't match.

Have I overlooked something, or is this just the bad player?
